Like a hard-earned, well deserved perma-vacation. That\u2019s not to say we suggest this is the time to jet somewhere warm and lie on the beach all day. Unless, of course, being a \u201csnowbird\u201d who flies south to avoid our chilly Canadian winters is your thing! But that is precisely the point: Retirement is your time, to spend how you\u2019ve always wanted. It\u2019s the time to celebrate your individuality by fully embracing who you are you, what you love, when, and how to unleash it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Where to begin? The benefits of blue sky brainstorming<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe your daily routine has been nine-to-five for as long as you can remember, or you\u2019ve had other responsibilities to fill the days. Perhaps some of those are carrying over into your official retirement\u2014whether it\u2019s familial obligations like helping with grandkids, or a volunteer position. But most of the time, retirement frees up more hours in the day for you to explore your passions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step One: <\/strong>Begin with a \u201cblue sky brainstorm\u201d. This is literally brainstorming with no limits\u2014not even the sky! What are all the things you love to do and have always wanted to do? Do not consider practical constraints at this stage. <a href=\"https:\/\/verveseniorliving.com\/news-events-blog\/5-benefits-of-journaling-for-seniors\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jot down everything and anything<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider questions like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;What are my strengths?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;What do I like to do for fun?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;What is something (a class, an activity, a hobby) I\u2019ve always wanted to do but never had the time for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;What matters most to me in my current life?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;What are my values?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;What (or who) gives me comfort?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;What did I like about my job?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Am I an introvert or extrovert?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step Two: <\/strong>Reflect! That last question might feel like a no-brainer, but you might be surprised. Consider your current social life but also the one you\u2019d <em>like<\/em> to have. Maybe it\u2019s a core group of friends you prefer even though <a href=\"https:\/\/verveseniorliving.com\/news-events-blog\/the-benefits-of-being-social\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">your social circle<\/a> seems wide based on work or other circumstances. Where\u2014and into <em>whom<\/em> would you like to put your time? Also consider the type of people in your current circle and how well they know the real you. Sometimes, it\u2019s okay to <a href=\"https:\/\/verveseniorliving.com\/news-events-blog\/grateful-living-transforming-retirement-into-a-journey-of-thankfulness\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">be grateful<\/a> to people for the time they\u2019ve spent in your life and move forward if certain friendships aren\u2019t continuing to serve your wellbeing. Remember: Now is your time! Are the people and activities currently in your life helping you be your best, or holding you back from what you want to do and who you really are?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Time is our most precious gift; to each other, and to ourselves. How will you spend yours?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step Three: <\/strong>Once you\u2019ve reflected\u2014a practice that is beneficial to the mind, body and spirit daily\u2014on where you are and where you want to go, join that yoga class or try a creative pursuit! Start practicing <a href=\"https:\/\/verveseniorliving.com\/news-events-blog\/mindful-aging-how-to-cultivate-inner-peace-and-well-being\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mindful living<\/a> to feel into how your body and mind respond. Is the fear of trying something new a little thrill that grows with anticipation and turns into something wonderful once you lean into it? Or do you truly not enjoy it? Once you start listening to your inner voice, you\u2019ll begin to feel more aligned in life and your individuality will shine through in all that you do, say, and are.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Retirement should be a time to celebrate a life well lived.
