Do not scroll, worry about tomorrow, or play back last week&#8217;s events. Instead, be present in the present time and pay attention to what is around you. That&#8217;s a quick summary of mindfulness. It may sound like something from a health magazine, but there is real evidence to back it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We think about well-being in every way here at Verve Senior Living. A lot of attention is paid to physical health, which is fair. But mental and emotional health are also important for having a good life. This article talks about that side of things: what mindfulness looks like in real life, why it&#8217;s important, especially as we age, and some easy ways to add a little more of it to your daily routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-mindfulness-really-mean\"><strong>What Does &#8220;Mindfulness&#8221; Really Mean?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We use the word a lot, so let&#8217;s keep it easy. Being mindful means paying attention to what you&#8217;re doing, how you&#8217;re feeling, and what&#8217;s going on around you without judging any of it right away. That is all there is to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lot of the time, most of us don&#8217;t even realize it. We eat without tasting, walk without noticing, and sit with our minds going to places that aren&#8217;t where we are. Being mindful is a nice way to keep coming back. Even though it doesn&#8217;t fix everything, it does change how you deal with stress, pain, and the everyday things that make up most of your life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regular practice of mindfulness has been linked to some really important benefits for seniors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Better memory, more focused attention, and stronger brain function<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More emotional intelligence and better mental health in general<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Less worry, stress, and heart disease risk<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Better circulation and stomach<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A higher capacity for physical pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Better sleep and a mood that stays up more often<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A lot more upbeat thoughts about everyday life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is a long list. The best part? You can do most of these things at home, at your own pace, and they don&#8217;t cost anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Always talk to your doctor before starting a new fitness or health plan, especially if you&#8217;re already taking care of an existing health issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mindfulness-activities-that-are-worth-trying\"><strong>Mindfulness Activities That Are Worth Trying<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no one way to do this that works for everyone. A morning walk can help some people feel calm. Some people need to write things down, talk them out, or get lost in a good book. What matters is that you find something that works for you and then do it often enough to notice a change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Start with these places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-strolling\">Strolling<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A good walk can be almost calming, especially if you&#8217;re not in a hurry. Whether you&#8217;re power-walking through the area to improve your cardiovascular health or just strolling through a park at your own pace, moving around, breathing fresh air, and seeing new things really helps your mind feel better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The important thing is to pay attention as you walk. How the air feels, the birds singing, and the light shining through the trees. That small change from &#8220;walk as errand&#8221; to &#8220;walk as experience&#8221; is where the mindfulness part really shines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-flexible-work-and-light-exercise\">Flexible work and light exercise<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s not just a philosophical point that movement and mood are closely linked; it&#8217;s also true. When you work out, endorphins are released, cortisol levels drop, and your nervous system has a chance to reset. This will work even if you don&#8217;t run a race. Asana class, a swim, gentle stretching in the morning, or even a light workout at the gym can all help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s more fun when you do it with other people. There&#8217;s something socially warm about group exercise that you can&#8217;t quite get from working out alone. You have someone to laugh with when the teacher says &#8220;just one more,&#8221; and you have someone to show up for even when you&#8217;re not feeling like working out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-practicing-gratitude\">Practicing Gratitude<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a lot of study behind this one, so it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/verveseniorliving.com\/news-events-blog\/the-power-of-gratitude\/\">important to pay attention to it<\/a>. Over time, noticing the good things in your life instead of letting them stay in the background while your fears take centre stage will actually change how you feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A thanks jar is a good way to do this. Write three things you&#8217;re thankful for on a piece of paper and put it in a jar every day. They don&#8217;t need to be deep. It doesn&#8217;t matter what it is: a nice cup of tea, a sunny afternoon, or a funny phone call. You can reach into that jar on bad days to remember how much goodness has been there the whole time. Surprisingly, this small habit pays off a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-books-to-read-and-audiobooks\">Books to read and audiobooks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It turns out that reading a good book is good for your brain as well as being a quiet joy. Focus, vocabulary, and brain engagement all improve with regular reading. Plus, getting lost in a story is a great way to take a break from worrying and overthinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Audiobooks are a great choice for reading books if you have trouble seeing or moving around. There are lots of choices that are funny, inspiring, thought-provoking, or just plain fun. Sit down somewhere nice, press play, and let someone else talk for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-seeing-a-therapist-or-counsellor\">Seeing a therapist or counsellor<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s important to say this again: talking to a mental health worker is not a sign of weakness. Anyone, of any age, can do it and feel more self-aware and in charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trained to listen without judging and help you work through stress, grief, loneliness, sadness, or just the weight of things that have built up over time, therapists and counsellors are there for you. A lot of seniors find it very helpful to have a place where they can talk freely without thinking about bothering their family or friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You or someone you care about has been putting this off. Think of this as a light push. Talking to someone can help you even if you&#8217;re not in a panic. Just remember that you are a person, which you already are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It takes very little to make a big difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being mindful doesn&#8217;t need you to be perfect or give up hours of your time. It wants you to pay attention to small things, like taking a slow walk, consciously taking a breath, or noticing and writing down a good thing. Those little things add up to something big that changes the way you move through the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We care about our inmates&#8217; physical health, but we also care about their mental and emotional health just as much.
