Lifelong Learning contributes to overall wellbeing by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Challenging the mind to keep neuropathways active<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list has-medium-font-size\">\n<li>Expanding knowledge and the sharing of ideas enforces empathy and understanding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list has-medium-font-size\">\n<li>Keeping boredom that leads to anxiety and depression at bay<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list has-medium-font-size\">\n<li>Being socially engaged in a classroom setting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list has-medium-font-size\">\n<li>Exercising thinking, learning and remembering skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list has-medium-font-size\">\n<li>Improving our memory<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And best of all, pursuing interests in retirement that life responsibilities may not have allowed for earlier!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Engaging with topics of interest in a meaningful way gives one a sense of purpose and achievement. Consider Margaret Fisher\u2019s study about <a href=\"https:\/\/nall.oise.utoronto.ca\/new\/fisher.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Informal Learning of Seniors in Canadian Society<\/a>, which sheds light on the correlation between Lifelong Learning and improved health and self-confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research studies by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) also suggest that activities involving thinking, learning and remembering can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/health\/preventing-alzheimers-disease-what-do-we-know\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer\u2019s<\/a> or other aging-related dementia. By exercising your brain regularly, you are inherently strengthening its ability to cope with challenges and build resilience against age-related disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-informal-vs-structured-lifelong-learning\">Informal vs. Structured Lifelong Learning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While we immediately picture Structured Lifelong Learning: Course enrolment or educational travel, Informal Lifelong Learning is just as valuable. From reading the newspaper to joining a book or walking club, doing a puzzle or morning Sudoku, whatever inspires you to stimulate the mind and absorb new information is a worthwhile pastime.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blogging, photography, and journaling are another way to recap life events and learnings that allow you to absorb and analyze new information while deepening your experience of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-to-pursue-learning-opportunities\">Where to Pursue Learning Opportunities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-universities\">Universities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>More and more, age is becoming just a number. While older adults may not be the target demographic for most universities, they do recognize the demand for Lifelong Learning and a lot of them offer opportunities to engage with learning: From full credit courses to auditing classes at <a href=\"https:\/\/mira.mcmaster.ca\/community\/life-long-learners\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">McMaster University<\/a>, to <a href=\"https:\/\/extendedlearning.ubc.ca\/courses-programs\/other-ubc-learning-opportunities\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UBC\u2019s courses<\/a> \u201cfor general interest, free of application, tuition or student fees\u201d applicable to those ages 65 and over, major educational institutions see the value in fostering Lifelong Learning at all ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Government of Canada also offers a Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP) that allows you to withdraw from your RRSPs to finance full-time training or education.
