For these reasons, winter can bring on mental health concerns such as depression; a direct result of season affective disorder (SAD).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/cpa.ca\/psychology-works-fact-sheet-seasonal-affective-disorder-depression-with-seasonal-pattern\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Psychological Association<\/a>, \u201cIt is estimated that SAD makes up 10% of all reported cases of depression. Approximately 15% of Canadians will report at least a mild case of SAD in their lifetime, while 2-3% will report serious cases. People with a family history of any form of depression may also be at risk of developing SAD, and Canadians are particularly at risk, as we have decreased sunlight during the winter months.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what to do during the dreary winter season?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-practicing-mindfulness-can-help-you-through-winter\">How Practicing Mindfulness Can Help You Through Winter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Incorporating mindfulness into your day takes practice. It involves being fully present in the moment mind, body, and spirit. In order to achieve such full-being awareness, whole-body listening, being conscious of your surroundings and actions, and sometimes touch or meditative mantras can help.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Practicing mindful moments this may, where you intentionally engage with whatever you\u2019re doing or whomever you\u2019re with, can help you lessen panic or anxiety by increasing your awareness of your thoughts, feelings, and physical body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-senior-mindfulness-exercises\">Senior Mindfulness exercises<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-\"><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Winter calls for more light! <\/strong>A few options are: Move your reading chair closer to a window, buy battery-operated candles on timers so that as soon as the sun goes down the interior illuminates, and switch to incandescent light bulbs.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Reduce screen time <\/strong>and your exposure to blue light, especially right before bedtime. Neither \u201cdoomscrolling\u201d on social media or the blue light devices give off are healthy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Regular exercise.<\/strong> If walking outdoors isn\u2019t an option due to the cold and icy temps, try <a href=\"https:\/\/verveseniorliving.com\/news-events-blog\/a-healthy-start-to-2022-stretching-exercises-for-seniors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gentle stretching<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/verveseniorliving.com\/news-events-blog\/a-gentle-approach-to-managing-arthritis-yoga-and-stretching-exercises-for-seniors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">yoga for seniors<\/a>, or going to a community center to engage in exercise indoors.
