For Ann, feeling welcomed begins with feeling known. Her story spans countries and generations, shaped by family, courage, and community.

“I have been married to my husband Ben for over 55 years and have been blessed with one son and two daughters,” she shared. “A part of my story which has shaped me from today is the decision to immigrate from the Philippines to Canada over 50 years ago. It was the best decision to raise a family, build a new life, learn about different culture and cuisine and meet new friends.”

At Evergreen Retirement Community, that sense of belonging shows up in everyday moments. “When I think about Evergreen and feeling welcomed, it means feeling valued, respected and safe. I am able to freely express my concerns and give feedback at anytime and having those concerns addressed in a respectful manner.”

Choosing Evergreen felt right from the start. “What stands out for me at Evergreen is the warmth and friendliness of the staff and truly caring for our needs.” She remembers how the welcome began the moment she arrived. “My husband and I felt welcomed from day one since moving into Evergreen. With the welcome gift and notes given at our door and checking in on the first day to make sure if we had everything we needed.”

Staying active is a big part of her life here. “I enjoy the variety of fitness classes like Drum Fit, Bollywood, lifting weights or stretching that you can do at your own pace.” She also enjoys creative programs, walking indoors and outdoors, and exploring new hobbies.

That spirit of welcome is something she offers others as well. “If I see someone sitting by themselves I like to take a moment and chat with them. If there is a new neighbour on my floor I like to introduce myself so that they don’t feel alone.”

Her advice for embracing new chapters is simple and full of joy. “My motto is always to have fun. Enjoy the time with family and friends as much as you can. Stay active physically and mentally. Eat well and don’t be afraid to do whatever you want to do.”
