When Joanne talks about her first visit to Carp Commons Village, she remembers the feeling immediately. She had spent years supervising co op students in different retirement residences and long term care homes, so she knew what felt right and what didn’t. Carp Commons was different. As she puts it, she felt like “royalty” the moment she walked through the door. That welcome stayed with her.

It was Joanne’s granddaughter Megan who encouraged her to take a look at Carp Commons after completing her volunteer hours there. Joanne trusted her instinct and Megan’s suggestion, and she quickly understood why her granddaughter spoke so highly of it. “There’s an absolutely incredible feeling as soon as you walk in,” she recalls.

Joanne has always been someone who steps forward when something needs doing. Throughout her life she taught, travelled widely, supported her husband’s business, became a Mary Kay director, founded the Manotick Messenger, helped start the Manotick Women’s Group, and coordinated Manotick’s 125th anniversary celebration. She describes herself as a doer and an organizer, someone who enjoys seeing things come to life.

At Carp Commons Village, that part of her hasn’t changed. She likes joining programs and staying engaged, though she has learned to balance her enthusiasm with rest when she needs it. She also helped start the resident choir, one of the many small ways she contributes to life in the residence.

What has surprised her most is how much she enjoys welcoming others. Joanne likes greeting people, offering reassurance, and answering questions for those who are new to Carp Commons Village. She introduces herself with warmth and a bit of humour, often mentioning Matilda, her electric wheelchair, which helps put people at ease. For her, these small moments matter. They help others feel the same sense of comfort she felt when she arrived.

When asked about her experience being invited to share her story, she laughs and admits she was “stunned.” But she also shares a simple piece of wisdom she believes applies anywhere. Smiling, she says, is not just about happiness but contentment. And here at Carp Commons Village, she feels that contentment from the people who greet her each day.

Through her presence, her openness, and her instinct to help others feel comfortable, Joanne reflects the spirit of Be Welcomed. Her story shows how a residence becomes a home, one warm introduction and one genuine connection at a time.
