Born in Hamilton in 1952, Russell has lived through many remarkable chapters. He grew up on the east mountain with dreams of becoming a professional golfer, but after a car accident changed his course, he redirected his energy to academics. That decision led him to McMaster University, where he earned a degree in Computer Science and became a Chartered Accountant, a powerful combination that opened opportunities across Canada and the U.S.
He built a fulfilling career as a controller with Midas Canada and CP Trucks before spending 25 years as a computer consultant. Alongside professional success, life brought him two children, whom he proudly raised as a single father. Later, he created a sustainable home on 10 acres of land, building a straw bale house and living close to nature for nearly two decades.
Today, he describes “living colourful” in a new way: “For me it’s not about ‘colourful,’ it’s about transition. I have lived a rewarding and colourful life. I need to accept where I am in life and be satisfied with embracing my past and enjoying the time I have.”
The decision to move into Holland Gardens wasn’t easy. Encouraged by his daughter, he agreed to explore options and eventually chose Holland Gardens.
“The staff seem genuinely concerned about the residents and showed a respect which would go a long way with my transition,” he explains. What began as a short-term stay quickly turned into home. “I was against the idea at the beginning and was planning to leave after my eye surgery. However, after 2 months I had made several friends and began to look forward to several of the events. While I still long for the farm, I can now not imagine living anywhere else. I have made the transition.”
He enjoys taking part in activities and hopes to add more, from cribbage to trips to Georgian Downs. While he still misses cooking, he makes up for it by sharing meals with his children. Staying active remains a priority, with walks and time at the gym on his list.
When asked what advice he would share with others considering a move to a retirement residence, he offers simple, heartfelt wisdom: “Stay active, and embrace your new lifestyle, and accept there are things that you are no longer capable of and must remain as cherished memories.”
At Holland Gardens, Russell has found his new home and a new way to live colourful.
