At Verve Aspen Woods, every resident carries a story worth celebrating. Fatema Al-Harazi’s story spans continents, cultures, and decades of quiet generosity.

Fatema has lived in India, Uganda, and Yemen and has visited 40 countries. She learned Arabic when she joined her husband’s family in Yemen, then built a new life in Canada. “I was shaped by diversity in place and people,” she says. “I have firsthand experience of Indian culture, United Nations diplomatic culture, and Yemeni culture.” That range gave her a wide view of the world, and a deep respect for the people in it.

Giving back has run through her whole life. While living in Yemen, Fatema volunteered at Mother Teresa’s Missions of Charity Seniors Home and met Mother Teresa in person. She helped fundraise for a school for the blind. At the United Nations, she helped manage donations from around the world in support of Yemen after a major earthquake in 1982. “It felt like a 24/7 role,” she recalls. That instinct to help others has stayed with her. At Verve Aspen Woods, Fatema earned a palliative care certificate and volunteers as companion care for residents in Assisted Living experiencing cognitive decline.

Fatema chose Aspen Woods for its design, its pool, and its warmth. “The whole atmosphere felt warm and welcoming,” she says. She brings that same warmth back into the community. She has shown her paintings in the resident craft and art shows. She hosted a samosa-making demonstration for fellow residents. Today, she oversees the plant room. Her days are full! She swims regularly, paints, and joins craft activities. She has picked up Mahjong and tile rummy along the way.

Asked what brings her the most joy in this chapter of life, Fatema doesn’t hesitate: “My family. Also, my extensive network of friends.” And when asked what wisdom she would pass on, her answer is simple and direct.

“Appreciate what you have and be grateful. Sometimes you need to see the third world to give your perspective and not grumble about minor inconveniences in life. Also be kind and loving to others.”

To be celebrated is to be seen for the full shape of a life: the countries lived in, the people helped, the skills passed on, the small joys kept close. Fatema’s story is a reminder that a life well-lived is built one act of care at a time.
