Members of the Danube Seniors Leisure Centre look forward to July, and the Salad Days Luncheon.

They dress up in their summery best, with floral shirts, capris and straw hats, and come out to enjoy a lunch of cold ham, roast pork and turkey, and an array of salads.

“There’s three bean, potato, pasta, carrot, Waldorf, green salad,” said Elke Pitkin, who co-ordinates the event.

Plus, there is a Jell-O mold and deviled eggs, rolls, coffee, tea, fruit punch, and dessert. With ice cream.

Seventy-six members attended the luncheon — “Not bad for summer,” said Pitkin, who put in long hours with a team of volunteers, to ensure that everything was a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds.

“You don’t want to disappoint. It’s a matter of pride,” she said.

No one was disappointed with the meal, or with the announcement made by a special guest.

Shelley Snoulten, from Holland Gardens Retirement Residence, came to share news of the new facility now under construction on Holland Street West and to present a donation of $500 from Holland Gardens and Verve Senior Living.

The gift was meant “to help offset the costs for these delicious lunches,” Snoulten said. “I want to thank you… We’re very excited to become a member of the Bradford community.”

The next luncheon for members will be a barbecue in August.
