Fall fashion is a whole animal all its own. Signified still by its September issue that drops like a fashionable brick each year, Vogue is at the forefront of curating classy, classic looks—ones that are at once familiar and fresh. Tweed and plaids. Suiting. The perfect denim. Jewel tones and statement pieces.

But how to turn those trends into something timeless for every age and body? And also affordable and accessible for seniors on a budget?

This is our October Issue, curated just for you by taking into account what matters most to you.

You already have what you need.

We bet if you looked in your closet right now, you’d already have key pieces to a fantastic fall wardrobe. Begin with a closet clean-out to reacquaint yourself with what’s in there and determine what still works for you, what can go, and what could use a cute new partner in dressing crime!

Think: pieces from last year that are still “in style” based on colour scheme or cut, summer tees and tanks that can be layered up with a cute cardigan or jacket for fall. Plus, starting with what you already have allows for a bigger splurge in other areas!

This is all part of what it means to build a Capsule Wardrobe. Coined by British boutique owner Susie Faux in the ‘80s, the concept is based in having a few high-quality, timeless pieces that can be used season after season because they don’t follow trends, but look good paired with them! T-shirts, skirts, jackets, and trousers that can be accessorized with statement pieces of the season.

A Capsule Wardrobe is also a lovely way to live sustainably: there’s less waste from “throwaway fashion” and it’s easier on the pocketbook when you’re buying fewer pieces!

The basics

Basics go beyond a simple solid colour tee. Think:

  • Tops that can be layered easily with cardigans and jackets for an updated look.

  • A quintessential black dress that works with flats and boots alike.

  • Versatile denim pants that pair with sneakers, booties, or flats; preferably high-waisted! A style that’s thankfully in style, but also extremely comfortable and flattering.

  • Trousers. A slim-leg trouser looks smart, and can be a go-to for lunch, dinner, groceries, and everying in between!

The best part about good basics is they will mix and match for even greater wardrobe options! The more items a piece pairs with, the more it deserves to be in your closet for years to come.

The not-so-basics

Statement piece accessories are the fun part of any outfit. Especially for fall, we’re talking bold necklaces or earrings to pair with a chunky sweater. A beautiful scarf that not only layers well, but provides warmth. A hat for those days.

By simply changing up your accessories—like shoes, scarves, jewelry pieces—you create a whole new look, for less!

But remember, the key to good accessoriazation is less is more. If you’re going with a big necklace, don’t wear a bracelet stack and huge earrings, as well. If you’re wearing a scarf, you might not even need a necklace. And when it comes to colour: one splash per outfit will do the trick, and choose shades that compliment you, not necessarily the trends!

Where to shop

Big box places like Walmart or Hudson Bay Company are a good place for seniors to shop for a variety of reasons. Their model is a one-stop-shop for easy purchasing that doesn’t require an all-day outing, they have easy online shopping options, and budget-friendly brands at both places. HBC even offers Timeless Style Tuesday, a discount for seniors 55+ that registered in the HBC Rewards program.

If you’re looking to splurge on wardrobe basics that will last for years to come, or that one trendy piece to pair with what you’ve got, try Banana Republic or Laura. Joe Fresh is also a great, budget-friendly Canadian line that offers up basics and seasonal favourites alike.
